Review and How To Use the Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker / Multi-Cooker
Crock-Pot has joined the electric pressure cooker revolution with their new Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker / Multi-Cooker. The Crock-Pot brand has become synonymous with slow cooker and now you can also pressure cook in a Crockpot.
Note: This review discusses the older version of the Crock-Pot Express, which doesn’t not have a manual button. If you’re looking for the newer version, we’ll have a review up soon.
Also, if you do have the older CrockPot Express, be aware that there is a recall for the lids on certain models. Click here to read more about the recall, including how to check if it applies to your model and on how to receive a replacement.
Target recently had the Crock-Pot Express on sale for $49, so I couldn’t resist buying it and taking it home for a test drive. (Regularly price at $69.)
The Crock-Pot Express comes with a recipe book, steaming rack, and serving spoon. It has a 6 quart non-stick cooking pot for easy cleanup. The inner pot is dishwasher safe.
The Crock-Pot Express Crock Multi-Cooker is not a top of the line pressure cooker, but it is a well made pressure cooker and an affordable option.
I was impressed with how quickly and quietly the Crock-Pot Express comes to pressure. It’s getting great reviews on Amazon as well.
How To Use the Crock-Pot Express Crock Pressure Cooker / Multi-Cooker
It has 9 pre-set pressure cooker buttons Meat/Stew, Beans/Chili, Rice/Risotto, Yogurt, Poultry, Dessert, Soup, Multigrain, and Steam. In addition to the Slow Cook, Brown / Sauté, and Keep Warm buttons.
WHICH BUTTON SHOULD I USE?
The multi cooker does not know what is in your pot. It doesn’t know how much it weighs, nor how long it will take to cook it. The buttons are just pre-set, suggested times for cooking that item.
You can cook chicken soup using the soup button, the poultry button, or the meat button. It doesn’t matter which button you use, chose the button with the closest cook time to the time in the recipe you’re using.
You adjust the pre-set times by using the “+” and “-” time select buttons.
Pre-set Times:
- Steam – 10 minutes is the pre-set time. You can change it from 3 minutes to 1 hour. 3 minutes is the shortest cook time available on the Crock-pot pressure cooker. If you want to cook something less than 3 minutes, you’ll need to set a timer and press the stop button after the desired number of minutes.
- Soup – 30 minutes. Range 5 minutes to 2 hours
- Poultry – 15 minutes. Range 15 minutes – 2 hours
- Beans/Chili – 20 minutes. Range 5 minutes to 2 hours
- Meat/Stew – 35 minutes. Adjustable range 15 minute to 2 hours
- Multigrain – 40 minutes. Range 10 minutes to 2 hours
- Rice/Risotto – 12 minutes low pressure. Range 6 minute to 30 minutes
- Dessert – 10 minutes low pressure. Range 5 minutes to 2 hours
- Yogurt – not a pressure cooker function – low temperature for 8 hours. Range 6 hours to 12 hours
- Slow Cook – not a pressure cooker function – high temperature for 4 hours. Range 30 minutes to 20 hours. Temperature adjusts to low and high.
- Brown / Saute – not a pressure cooker function – high temperature for 30 minutes. Range 5 minutes to 30 minutes. Temperature adjusts to low and high.
- Keep Warm – not a pressure cooker function – warm temperature for 4 hours. Range 30 minutes – 4 hours.
You’ll want to keep the pre-set times handy so you know before selecting a button what the cook time and pressure level will be.
The Steam Release Value is in the sealed position (pressure cooking position) when the arm on the knob is facing the picture of the steam with an X over it. You can get more information about releasing the pressure on my quick pressure release or natural pressure release post.
Note: You always cook in the non-stick inner pot. Be careful not to add ingredients to the pressure cooker housing when the inner pot is not in place.
You always need liquid in your pot when pressure cooking. Crock-Pot recommends a minimum of 1 cup. If you’re cooking ingredients that release liquid as they cook and have a short cook time, you may be able to use less, but 1 cup is a good starting point.

Pros and Cons of The Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker
Now that I’ve explained how to use the Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker, let me share the pros and cons.
Pros
- Quiet
- Well written manual
- Low price
- Comes to pressure quickly
- Has a yogurt function
Cons
- No manual or pressure cook button – you have to use one of the pre-set buttons.
- You have to be careful not to scratch a non-stick pot
- The float valve is in the handle where it is difficult to see. It’s harder to tell when the pressure has been released and you can open the pot.
- The pre-set cooking time adjusts to a range of cook times that varies for each setting. The steaming chart included in the manual indicates a cook time of 1 minute but the steam function does not adjust to 1 minute.
Despite the cons, I’ve used the Crock Pot Pressure Cooker for a few weeks now and I’ve been really pleased with how well it performs.
If you are in the market for a low priced pressure cooker with a non-stick pot, then the Crock-Pot Express Crock Multi-Cooker is an option worth considering.
If you’ve purchased a Crock-Pot Express and want to join a Facebook group, check out the Crockpot Express Community.
The slow cooker function is AWFUL. It spews steam and liquid non stop and creates a wet mess all over any cupboards and countertops within a two foot radius of the appliance. It has a small receptacle that attaches to the side in order to catch any moisture that puddles around the lip where the lid rests, however this is extremely small in comparison to the amount of vapor/moisture/spray that comes out of the lid during slow cooking. The pressure cooking function has always worked fine for me but as far as this being useful as a slow cooker – I am beyond disappointed. Thankfully I still have a traditional slow cooker because every time I try using my Crock Pot Express for slow cooking, I inevitably get frustrated with the hot mess it creates and have to move my food to the actual slow cooker to finish cooking.
Are you using the correct lid? Mine doesn’t ever leak out and I predominately use it as a slow cooker
I cannt put the time past 20min. I have it set for beans/chili.
What is the maximum liquid you can pressure cook with?
Hi Lisa – you can fill your pot 2/3’s full with liquid.
How to make hard boiled eggs in crockpot instant pot?
Here’s a link to my recipe for hard-boiled eggs https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/pressure-cooker-hard-boiled-eggs/ The directions are the same for the Crockpot pressure cooker, just adjust the cook time to 6 minutes.
My Crockpot Express Pressure cooker has been a problem. The pot does not pressurize fully and begin to cook, The lid has blown off 2x ,in spite of following all directions. Has this happened to anyone else. Ive only used it about 6x.
Hi Shirley – how old is your Crockpot Express? There was a recall on older models https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2021/Crock-Pot-6-Quart-Express-Crock-Multi-Cookers-Recalled-by-Sunbeam-Products-Due-to-Burn-Hazard
I like pork tenderloin, but I can adjust the time to 6 minutes any idea
Hi April – you can use the soup setting and adjust it to 6 minutes.
Hi just got this. My question is as I’m not a good cook how do I know how long to cook things for ie. If I want to steam chicken or salmon I don’t have a clue how long to cook for
Hi Michelle – when you’re just starting out, it’s best to try trusted recipes and then when you get the hang of cooking with it, then you can branch out on your own. We’ve got a great getting started guide https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/getting-started-with-your-new-electric-pressure-cooker-or-instant-pot/
When I’m cooking anything in my instant pot (I’ve actually only made soup in it so far) I hit the start button and it always says “HEAT”. I never know if I should start timing then or do I wait?
Hi Cari – no, electric pressure cookers take time to come to pressure and they’ll start counting down the cook time once they’ve come to pressure. So the cook time is only the time elapsed after it comes to pressure.
I got mine on a black friday sale and cannot use it because water drains out of the bottom. I don’t know what I am doing wrong and can’t find anything that tells me how to seal the bottom so it doesn’t leak. do you know?
Hi Diane – you always have to use the inner pot when cooking. Never put water in the housing part, always in the inner pot. The top picture shows the house and the inner pot on the right side.
First point in your cons is not correct. You CAN adjust the pressure cooker time, you DON’T have to use the pre-set buttons.
Hi Marco – the new model does have a Manual Pressure button. The new Crockpot™ Express Easy Release pressure cooker also has a new pressure release mechanism. Crockpot Express also has a new oval model that we plan to review soon. Thanks!
Same happening to me I closed the lid properly and put it to seal 10mins and heat is still displaying help!
I use the steam setting to steam corn on the cob. I put the steam rack in pour water in until it is just below the rack. I then put the lid on and set the steam release valve to close. I then press steam and when it comes to pressure let it run the full 10 minutes then release the steam immediately. The corn seems to come out very good but I was wondering if I should steam the corn for the full 10 minutes or shut it off sooner.
Hi Clark – I prefer a 2 to 3 minute cook time https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/pressure-cooker-corn-on-the-cob/ but if you like how it’s cooking at 10 minutes on steam then I would continue to do that.
I have a manual button but it is unresponsive. I have no problem using a preset and adjust with the + and – but I would like to use the manual button. Is there a secret?
What is Pepe mean??? I put the beans & ham and comes up Pepe and I’m waiting to start cooking
Hello! I lost my book so I’m asking and forgot how to use my pressure crock-pot. Can I put my spareribs on slowcook and if I can how long. I wanted to slow cook them.
Hi Denise – you can cook spare ribs on slow cook, cook ribs on high for 4 hours until fork tender.
Hello – I am a first time user. I put ham hocks beans fluid in pot. I pushed bean/button and hit start. It has been hissing for over 20 minutes and still displays HEAt. What did I do wrong?
Hi Cherry – if you have the steam release valve in the closed position and the gasket is seated properly, you probably didn’t do anything wrong. It just takes a while for a big pot of beans and liquid to come to pressure. Hopefully, it did reach pressure and you’re enjoying beans now. .
Hey I was just wondering what the multigrain button is for?
Hi Cassondra – it’s for brown rice, wild rice, and tougher grains like that.
How do you clean under the pressure valve that’s on the outside of the lid?
Hi Carol – The Steam Release Value just pulls straight up and I immerse it in soapy dishwater and rinse it under running water.
can i use steam basket for air frying or will it damage pot or basket
Hi Veronica – air frying is not recommended for the Crockpot Express because of the nonstick coating on the inner pot.
Can I pressure fry in my crock pot express?
Hi Ceil – no, you cannot pressure fryer in the Crockpot Express. You need a special pressure fryer to fry.
I am not sure of which setting to use for frozen field peas and turkey necks.
Hi Aaron – I haven’t cooked field peas before, but based on this stovetop recipe https://www.aforkstale.com/how-to-cook-field-peas/ they should take about 10 minutes in the pressure cooker with a 10 minute npr. So you could use the bean setting and adjust the time to 10 minutes.
Hi! I just got this pot last week and tried to make chicken wings in it last night. I think I’m confused on exactly how it works. I pressed the “poultry” button and then start. The screen then said “HEAT”. I was under the impression that once it was done pressurizing it would let me select a time to actually cook. I sat there for almost 40 minutes with it still saying “HEAT”. I thought it would beep at me or something when it was done pressurizing. I ended up just stopping it and opening the lid. The wings were done (and delicious), I guess my question is how do I know, after i push the selected button, that my food is done cooking? Or that the pot is done pressurizing and is now cooking? Thanks in advance!
Hi Kaylan – when it reaches pressure, it should switch to the cooking time and start to countdown. I’m not sure why it never reached pressure for you. I recommend you do a water test https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/instant-pot-water-test/ and see if it comes to pressure for you.
I’m having this same problem! I’ve used mine twice and it will not get past Heat and definitely is not pressurizing. Have you had any luck?
Hello. Can I put an oven proof bowl inside the Inst-pot cooker on the rack with 1&1/2 cups water in the pot? Thank you.
Hi Kris – manufacturers such as Corning, don’t recommend it. Initially, Instant Pot said anything oven safe was okay to use and I have never had a problem using oven-safe dishes in my pressure cookers. So it’s really a personal choice. Metal cake pans, such as a 7-inch round cake pan, are a good alternative I often use.
I bought a Crockpot Pressure cooker. CN I use this pot for Pressure canning jars?
Hi Julia – no, the USDA has not approved it for pressure canning. You can use it for hot water bath canning. Here’s more info https://www.friedalovesbread.com/2017/09/safe-steam-canning-with-your-instant.html
Hi I bought the crockpot express crock xl I want to use the slow cooker to make a stew I am not sure what setting to use with the glass lid as not wantin* to use the pressure part Thank you
Hi Joan – Use the Slow Cook function, it is not a pressure cooker function, on high temperature for about 4 hours.
Thank you so much. My next question is what is the difference between the 6 quarts and the four quart?
Typically there’s not much difference between a 6 quart and a 4 quart. Just be sure not to fill it more 2/3 full and when cooking foods that expand during cooking such as pasta, rice, and beans, etc. don’t fill it more than 1/2 full.
Hi, thanks for the information you share. I got a new Crockpot Express. How do I clean the lid?
Hi Mariad – you can submerge the lid in hot soapy water and rinse well under hot water. Remove the silicone gasket and steam release valve and clean those as well. Some people even put their lid in the dishwasher, but I prefer to wash it by hand. Here’s some great tips https://simpleandseasonal.com/before-using-crockpot-express/
I’m still having problems with the slow cooker function. I usually cook beans for about 7 hours. I can’t figure out how to punch that time in.
Hi Joyce – you should be able to press the slow cook button and then immediately press the + button to change the time in 30 minute increments.
I just bought myself the 10qt for myself for Christmas and going to cook a 9lb pork butt. I want to pressure cook it so I was wondering do I hit meat and how much time should I adjust it to if will let me. How long to cook it? Please help!
Exciting! I have a great getting started guide which explains which button to use https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/getting-started-with-your-new-electric-pressure-cooker-or-instant-pot/ For a 9 lb pork butt, you may want to cut it into smaller pieces so it cooks more quickly and evenly. My recipe is for 2 lb. pieces https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/easy-pressure-cooker-pulled-pork/ Have fun Jaime!
I followed your recipe for steamed fish it said to leave the valve open I can’t understand how the pressure builds up with the valve open. It stayed on heat and didn’t go to steam I turned it off after 15 minutes and there was no water left. What did I do wrong.
Thank you in advance
Hi Glenis – you must have been using someone else’s recipe. Do you have a link to the recipe you used? You would have to close the steam release valve for it to come to pressure.
Crockpot express crock xl multi cooker recipe book page 21 paper wrapped steamed seabass fillet. It definitely says secure the lid and ensure the steam release valve is in The release open position press steam set time for 6 minutes then press start
Hi Glenis – the manual on page 22 says the Steam function is a pressure cooking function and the steam release valve should be in the sealed position. So you’ll want to close the valve when using the Steam function.
Thank you so much I will do that in future
Hi there! Such great info! Thanks so much for this! I have used my pot for the first time today to steam veges. Worked wonderfully! I have a query about cooking chicken. I see in the recipe book a quick roast but I am wanting to cook slow and turn it into broth once done. Do you have any tips?
Many thanks,
Thanks Kylie – glad it was helpful. Here’s my chicken stock recipe https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/chicken-stock-in-the-pressure-cooker/ I haven’t done a slow cooker version. Have fun!
Hi.This has been really helpful. There wasn’t a lot of info out there on the express. I would like to know how to make hard boiled eggs the best way. Thank You
Thanks Terri – glad it was helpful. Here’s a great post on cooking eggs https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/how-to-make-perfect-pressure-cooker-instant-pot-eggs/
I’ve had mine a year and am overwhelmed. It’s so different from instapot that I don’t know how to convert. Can any setting be used for anything? Steam can be used for meat? Trying to do 5 minutes and using the meat button only goes as low as 15 minutes. This thing is tough to figure out!
Hi Amanda – yes, steam can be used for meat. Just pick the cook time closest to the time in the recipe.
Yes you can use steam ! Love it I use the meat button and pressure cook it with sauces . I love the tender meat and tasty sauce!
Depending on the model you have, there is a manual pressure option and you can cook for as little as 1min. You press the start/stop button and then hit the pressure button.
As for anyone looking to do large roasts, 5-10 min on high pressure, then let it release pressure on its own for 15-45min, depending on size & type of meat/doneness preference.
Thanks for the updated info Derek – I know they’ve added several new models and features, including a new Crockpot Express that has an air fryer lid. I’ve never tried cooking a roast like that, I assume you need to start with a fairly tender roast?
I’m using Instant Pot recipes in my Express Pot. So far so good. I just have to tweak which buttons/times I’m using. This has been quite the learning experience for me. Thanks for all the tips.
I traded in my crockpot for an instant pot. A co-worker loves hers. Me…not so much. I have tried to cook beef both as a pressure cooker and a crockpot. The meat doesn’t cook tender like it did in my crockpot. I am disappointed. I did have a big piece of meat today but even the veggies on the bottom were not tender. I bought this because it has a yogurt mode. I will be really unhappy if that is all I can make in the express pot. The chicken was great and I am going to try soup later this week but I’ll have to try a new way to cook beef. I am sorry I sold my trusty crockpots.
Hi Denise – it can take a little while to learn to use the Instant Pot, but you can tender get tender meat cooking it under pressure. I recommend sticking with some easy recipes until you get that hang of it. Here’s mine https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/easy-recipes-for-the-pressure-cooker/
hi can you please tell me what the multigrain button is for can’t find anything on it but notice its the only one that goes down to 1 minute n my Crock-pot Express thanks
Hi Sandee – unless they’ve changed it, multigrain goes down to 10 minutes and is for things like brown rice.
I made stuffed pepper soup in my express pot. The recipe said sat for 25 minutes. I used the chili/bean setting and set for 15 min. The display had heat on it the whole time I let the soup cook. It turned out good but had no idea what stage the soup was in.
Hi Joellen – when you’re cooking soup, it does take a long time for the soup to come to pressure. The time won’t start counting down until the soup comes to pressure. So I assume that your soup never came to pressure and just cooked as it was preheating. I recommend doing a water test to familiarize yourself with how the pressure cooker works https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/instant-pot-water-test/ then it will make more sense next time.
We have followed the recipes to the letter and time noted, for pressure cooking, but on items that have sauces such as stronganoff and marinara sauce the sauces are reduced to water thin liquid which has no flavor. What might we be doing wrong or are all those type of items supposed to cool and if so why is that procedure not mentioned in the cook book?
Hi Cherrelyn – which recipes are you following? The key is to use the minimum amount of liquid necessary to achieve pressure while still maintaining a flavorful sauce. For a beef stroganoff, you’ll want to get a good sear on the meat and deglaze the pan to add flavor to the sauce. Add layers of flavor with onions, etc. and using beef broth instead of water. Here’s my recipe https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/beef-stroganoff-pressure-cooker/ With marinara, you may prefer to cook that pot in pot to avoid watering down the sauce https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/how-to-use-the-pot-in-pot-method-in-your-pressure-cooker-instant-pot/ https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/how-to-cook-pasta-in-the-instant-pot/
Help
I purchased the 10qt to do do larger cuts of meats I CANNOT find a guide to know how long to cook meat per pound.
I have a 5 lb roast bone in. How many minutes per pound do I cook?
Hi Kim – it’s a little more complicated with the pressure cooker timing, that’s why there’s not typically minute per pound charts. I recommend following recipes until you get the hang of using the pressure cooker. What type of roast is it? How do you want to serve it – sliceable or fall apart tender?
Kim I have the 10qt model too. From what I have learned, the cook time is really dependant on the thickness of the meat, rather than the total amount in the pot. Due to the size of the pot, it probably takes a little longer to get to pressure as well (and obviously the heat will start the cook process as it’s heating up) but I have not noticed any issues over-cooking due to the preheating. I have had a couple of issues in the beginning not having enough liquid but generally atleast 1cup usually is enough (even though it looks practically empty still). I do sometimes cook spaghetti & meat (meatballs or just ground beef + pasta + sauce + extra water) and in order to just about cover the pasta with liquid it usually ends up needing almost too much extra water to cover the pasta (unfortunately the steam alone doesn’t soften the pasta well!) So the sauce could end up almost too runny for my taste. Sometimes I’ll use an extra jar of sauce rather than more water so it isn’t as liquid (it does thicken a little after removing the lid though). This is such a simple single-pot meal for very busy evenings, you can even use frozen store bought meatballs right into the pot! (We use gluten free pasta and meatballs) Meal cooks under pressure ~1/2 the recommended time on the pasta box, and meat cooks to temperature during this time frame. Not as good as an Italian grandma would make it but definitely not bad for 4 minutes of prep and 6 or 7 minutes of cook (+ preheat time) and one pot to clean in the end!
My CrockPot is not quite a year old. Tonight, when the food was done and the pressure was released, the lid won’t come off. Now what do I do?
Hi Cathy – did the float valve drop. Sometimes it can get stuck even if the pressure is released. Do you have a chopstick that you can try pushing down on the float valve to see if you can get it to drop?
This website has been very useful. The information here should be in the instructions with the appliance. It has taken me a long time researching before finding this. Now I better understand the Crockpot Express. It has also been difficult finding recipes There are oodles of recipes for Instance Pot but not for Crockpot Express. After reading this website I feel more confident in using my Crockpot Express. Thanks.
Thanks Mary Ann – I’m glad the post was helpful. I agree the manual should include more information. Have fun pressure cooking!
I have recipe to cook macaroni for 4 minutes. I can’t find a setting to do 4 minutes. Which one should I use?
Is 6 minutes under rice ok?
Hi Corinne – if you use the steam setting, you can adjust it to 4 minutes.
Any recommendations on a guide to determine what type of food falls under the predefined buttons on the express? For example, which button for tuna noodle casserole? Seems easy in an instant pot wit the manual/pressure cook button, but not so with the express. Stew? Rice/risotto?
Hi Jeff – since there’s no designated manual button, treat all of the buttons like a manual button and use the button with the closest cook time to the cook time in the recipe you’re using. Once you’re comfortable using the Express you can start to cook on your own without recipes.
use the chili button as manual since it has the largest allowable time range
Hi! Are recipes for the instant pot usable with this? i tried making an Instant Pot chili recipe which used the bean/chili function, and it came out like soggy chili-flavored soup. (It called for 7 cups of beef broth, too, which I thought was really odd!)
Hi Amy – yes, most Instant Pot recipes should work well in the Crockpot Express. My chili recipe uses much less broth https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/pressure-cooker-beef-chili/ Give that a try next time 🙂
I have found that all the instant pot recipes I have tried work exactly the same (it’s just pressure cookers with a few glorified buttons in the front!). The key to remember is the times listed in recipes don’t include preheat times. Although the cooking actually starts as it heats up, I have not found any issues with most posted cook times and just set (or atleast started with) the recommended times (in the recipes) punched into the crock pot express clock and let it do it’s thing- it starts counting down once the pressure is right inside.
I’m using mine for the first time today and I’m cooking a pork loin. I put it on meat/stew and added a bottle (24 oz.) of mojo criollo marinade in it with some added spices and it just keeps adding time. Is this normal. The keep warm button is lighted. When do I release the steam?
Hi James – if it’s completed cooking and the Keep Warm setting is now being used, it will count up. You can let the pressure release naturally until the float pin drops and the lid can be easily opened, or you can quick release and release the remaining pressure. Here’s my post that explains quick release https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/quick-pressure-release-or-natural-pressure-release/
Hi Barbara,
I’m hoping you can answer my question too, I just got the express cooker and it will not let me lower the cook time for poultry. It presets at 15 minutes and will not go lower. Most of my recipes call for 6-10 minutes not 15 minutes. Any idea how to get around this? Thanks Chloe.
Hi Chole – you’ll need to choose a preset that adjusts to a shorter time. For example, the steam button has the shortest cook time – 3 minutes. See the section above on the preset times in the Which Button To Use section.
Can you use aluminum foil in the crockpot pressure cooker?
Hi Laura – yes, there’s no problem using aluminum foil in the Crockpot Express Pressure Cooker.
Can you use aluminum foil in the Crockpot Express Instant Pot? I am worried about scratching the Teflon coating. I absolutely love my CP Express.
Hi Kelly – I don’t think the aluminum foil would cause a problem as long as you don’t rub it against the sides.
Found a recipe in which you transition the cooking portion of the pot from inside the pressure cooker to the oven… will this work with the crock pot pressure cooker? It is a whole chicken recipe in which placing the pot into the oven with the chicken on the broil setting to make the skin crispy. Thanks!
Hi Mindie – since the inner pot is non-stick, it’s probably not safe to put it under the broiler. I would transfer it to a broiling pan first.
Hi there – above you wrote “You adjust the pre-set times by using the “+” and “-” time select buttons.”
My CP does not have a “time select button”, only “+” and “-” buttons…
If I want to cook something for 8 minutes, should I select “Steam” and press the “-” button?
Thank you!
Hi Julie – yes, you can use the Steam button and the minus button, or the other pressure cooking soup or beans.
I would like to cook some pinto beans. What should I put the setting on.
Hi Mike – you can use the bean setting. Here’s a great post about cooking pinto beans https://www.lettyskitchen.com/how-to-cook-pinto-beans-pressure-cooker/
I think I must be reading your article wrong when you say in one of the cons when you say there is no manual or pressure cook button. On my Crockpot Express the button between soup and sauté is the manual button for the pressure cooker. And I’d like to add that the non-stick liner is a fantastic bonus. The contents brown perfectly without sticking and afterwards although it is dishwasher safe I find it never needs more than a quick rinse. I always use a wooden spoon to stir with.
Oh, wow, that’s really interesting—the button between Soup and Saute on mine is Multigrain. Will you email a picture our way? info at pressurecookingtoday dot com? We’d love to see if maybe they’ve released an updated version! We hadn’t heard this before!
Hi I’m new to this crock pot cooking. While cooking my crock pot beeps and comes up with E5. Could you please tell me what that is, and how to fix it. Thanks Jennnifer
Hi Jennifer! Is there a specific recipe you’re having this problem with?
Generally, the E5 code appears when either the lid or Steam Release Valve is being used for a cook setting that doesn’t come to pressure. Be sure to leave the lid off when using the Brown/Sauté setting, and make sure the lid is turned to the release position when using it for a slow cook or yogurt setting.
After you get the error, unplug the crockpot for at least 5 seconds, then plug it in and try again.
Hope this helps!
Do you know if cold start yogurt works well in this? I’ve done it in my 3 qt Instant Pot and it’s perfect, but I want to double the recipe.
Hi Tina – I haven’t tried it in the Crockpot Express, but it should work just as well as in the Instant Pot.
Is there a stainless steel insert that is compatible w the crockpot pressure cooker? Not excited about the nonstick coating. Thanks!
Hi Mary – currently I’m not aware of any stainless steel inserts that fit the Crockpot Express.
Hi,
I recently purchased a Crockpot Pressure Cooker. I would like to know if it is normal for the cooker to be releasing steam & making a loud hissing noise when it is building pressure (Heat)? I made sure the valve was positioned correctly, but the loud noise & steam concern me.
Hi Carmen – when the pressure cooker is coming to pressure, steam builds up and pushes up the float valve. When the float valve is pushed closed/sealed shut pressure cooking will start and then there should be very little steam released and very little noise. The float valve is inside the hole in the handle of the lid.
Hi. Whenever I use the slow cooker setting on high the food only gets slightly warm and never cooks. Also, I can’t seem to get the odor out of the silicone seal. Each time I use it the odor gets worse. My whole kitchen, which is small, has an unpleasant odor from the crock pot. Any suggestions?
Hi John – unfortunately, the silicone gasket does absorb odors. Some people think washing it in the dishwasher helps to get rid of the smell; some people like putting it in the sun to deodorize; however, I haven’t found anything that fully gets rid of it. I usually store the lid upside down on top of the pressure cooker to air out and after a week or so, that helps somewhat. I haven’t had any experience using the slow cooker function on the Express but people are generally not impressed with the slow cooker function on multi-cookers.
buenas tardes donde puedo descargar el manual en español. me pueden informar por favor?
I wrote the manufacturer and they responded that they do not have a Spanish version of the manual. Here’s a link to the English version https://www.crock-pot.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-crock-pot-Library/default/dw188e9eba/documents/instruction-manuals/SCCPPC600-V1-Express%20Crock%20IB.PDF
I am trying to cook a chicken recipe that calls for 8 minutes cook time. This crazy thing wont let me go less than 15. What setting should I use instead of chicken?
Hi Ellen – you have to use a setting with less time. Look at the pre-set times above. Soup lets you adjust down to 5 minutes.
HEY!! Thanks for your review.. I’m loving my Crockpot Brand Pressure cooker. BUT… for some reason it wont work on the Brown/Saute feature. Whenever I put it on that to brown the hamburger or something prior to pressure, after a minute it beeps and a number comes up. I’ve looked up that number and it’s like “overheat” I hope you can help. I’ve tried finding the answer without any luck so far. 🙁 THANK YOU!!
Hi Penni – that’s so frustrating. It sounds like you may have a faulty unit. You’ll want to contact Crock Pot https://www.crock-pot.com/customerservicecontact?cid=contactus
I’m wondering if this pressure cooker can also be used to can foods, such as fresh veggies in glass jars. Any one use it for this purpose?
Hi Carri – no, currently there are no electric pressure cookers that have been approved for canning, except hot water canning. Here’s more info http://www.friedalovesbread.com/2017/09/safe-steam-canning-with-your-instant.html
Hi, I’m having the same problem Leslie has. My heat mode doesn’t turn off and yes, steam comes out from around the edges of the lid. How can this problem be fixed? This is my first experience with pressure cookers, I never owned one before. When I saw the steam around the edges of the lid, I thought the pot was going to explode, so I haven’t used it since that first attempt at making soup.
Hi Barbara – if steam is coming around the sides of the lid you probably don’t have the silicone gasket in place properly. Remove it from the lid and reinstall it. Try bringing the pressure cooker to pressure again with just water in the pressure cooker https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/instant-pot-water-test/ It will not explode if steam is coming out around the sides of the lid, it will just keep heating, trying to come to pressure until all of the water is cooked away.
Hi Barbara – It worked! The water test went well and I now understand how the crock pot express works. I’m so happy I found you before returning it. Thank you for your help!
Great! I’m so glad you found me too. Have fun!
This happened to me when my wife removed the rubber gasket for cleaning and I didn’t realize it as removed. If the rubber gasket is in place inside the lid then there should be no steam escaping from the lid, only from the valve at the top (until the valve closes itself).
We are having trouble using our crock pot pressure cook aren’t there any instructions book you can to walk to thru using this
Hi Shirley – I have a series of posts that help you get started. Here’s the first one https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/getting-started-with-your-new-electric-pressure-cooker-or-instant-pot/
Hi, I also am having issues with it not coming out of heat mode. The first time I was making soup and had a lot liquid. When I stopped the process because it was taking a very long time there was no liquid left. The second time I made the same soup I stopped it on my own before it ran out of liquid. At what point is the heat mode supposed to turn off?
Hi Lesley – it sounds like you’re not getting a good seal. Are you seeing steam around the edges of the lid?
You may have already answered this but most of the recipes I have tried call for the use of manual setting. What is the work around sense the Crockpot Express doesn’t have that function?!?!
Hi Amanda – you’ll just use the pressure setting with the time closest to the time in the recipe you’re using.
I just received this as a gift. I want to cook a 3lb frozen pork roast- boneless. How do I cook it in the crock pot pressure cooker?
Hi Lisa – what type of pork roast is it? If it’s a sirloin tip cook it like this https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/pork-sirloin-tip-roast-pressure-cooker/ If it’s a pork shoulder or butt, pulled pork would be a good option. You can also use a pork loin roast for pulled pork, but it isn’t as succulent.
Can’t find my instructions. My sauté function is flashing a code, and I don’t know what is wrong. It won’t heat up. I’ve been having great luck until now. Can you help me please, and thank you.
Hi Barbara – what error code is flashing? Often it’s just that it’s overheated and letting it cool down is all that is needed.
Is there a special way to clean this thing? Yesterday afternoon I made curried chicken in the pot. Last night I made oatmeal with fruit and sugar. My oatmeal came out tasting like curry! I notice everytime I use the pot, it retains the smell of everything I’ve cooked. Isnt usually a problem since I cook savory dishes in it most times. But sweet curried oatmeal is not pleasant! So any suggestions? Vinegar? Bleach? Baking soda?
Hi Simone – it’s the silicone gasket in the lid that absorbs the odors. Order a second gasket and keep it just for sweet/mild dishes. I store the lid upside down so the gasket airs out when not in use and that helps. Some air it out in the sun, and that works if you have a spot to do it and no pets 🙂 Everything else is hit and miss for removing the smell.
I dropped the lid of the pot causing the pressure valve to pop off, so now it falls off all the time…however, when I put it back in, it seems to work just fine while cooking. Is there a way to ‘reconnect’ it?
Also, have you (or anyone) had significant issues with scratching of the pan? When it goes in the sink to soak, it seems to become the catch all of anything that will fit, especially silverware! Can you recommend a good place to get a new one?
Hi Hillary – the steam release valve does fit on loosely. If it’s working fine, then it’s probably okay. You can order replacement parts on the Crockpot website https://www.crock-pot.com/parts-and-accessories/express-crock/crock-pot-express-crock-multi-cooker-replacement-parts-sccppc600-v1/SCCPPC600-V1-PARTS.html
I am cooking a pot roast with potatoes and carrots. I have seared the meat added broth and put in the vegetables. I pushed the stop/start and meat stew buttons. It has heated and now shows time of 35min. I wanted to add an additional ten minutes, but can’t seem to increase the time.
Hi Sandra – you would have to cancel the cycle to add the extra time. It won’t release the pressure though, so it should start back up quickly.
I love my Crock Pot Express Multi Cooker!! Everything I have tried has turned out beautifully. The only question I have —- Is the steam setting high pressure? For instance I cooked teriyaki chicken wings and the poultry setting only adjusts down to 15 minutes. What I did was I turned the pot off after 10 minutes. But could I use the steam setting at 10 minutes to pressure cook the chicken wings instead?
Nowhere that I can find tells me if it is high or low pressure when using steam setting.
Hi Marnie – the manuals says the default setting for Steam is high pressure, so you can use the steam setting for 10 minutes for your chicken. https://www.crock-pot.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-crock-pot-Library/default/dw188e9eba/documents/instruction-manuals/SCCPPC600-V1-Express%20Crock%20IB.PDF
What is the Bobber Valve for and why does it release steam before it starts cooking? I don’t remember it doing that the first time I used the pressure cooker.
There’s a float valve that sits inside the hole in the handle. The steam pushes the float valve closed and seals the lid shut. The steam release valve is the valve where the steam releases during a quick pressure release, but you should see much steam coming out of it while it’s coming to pressure.
I cannot get the time setting under 15 minutes what am I doing wrong
Hi Sue – some settings don’t go below 15 minutes. Try using the Soup, Beans or Steam settings.
From what I’ve read, you must always start with cold water. If you start with hot or warm water I think it doesn’t start to warn up and pressurize correctly. I did have a slight issue after sauteing and then setting pressure but figured it out. My daughter and I cooked the same meal over Skype as she’s in another state. Both worked out well!
Hi Cheri – recipe times are based on starting with cold water, so if you start with hot or warm water, you may need to increase the cook time. I don’t think it’s the heat from sauteing that’s a problem, instead if people don’t deglaze the pot and there’s stuck on food or if you’ve floured meat before browning, that can cause problems coming to pressure.
I’ve used a pressure cooker for over 40 years. Have heard so much about these electric cookers from the younger generation in my family that I decided to buy one. Not impressed, might have to return it. Then I realized that a lot of the people that are bragging about their cooker never owned/used the stove top pressure cooker. LOL
Hi Krause – many are new to pressure cooking, but even those who have used a pressure cooker before do love the electric pressure cookers because they are set it and forget it easy. You don’t have to regulate the pressure and you don’t have to be home to turn off the pressure cooker when the cook time is up. The electrics automatically switch to the Keep Warm setting after the cook time is up.
Where does the condensation collector go
Hi Lorrie – it slides onto the back just underneath the lid. There’s a diagram on page 6 of the manual https://www.crock-pot.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-crock-pot-Library/default/dw188e9eba/documents/instruction-manuals/SCCPPC600-V1-Express%20Crock%20IB.PDF
lost manual i dont know how to get the lid to lock on the thing to pressure cook. All the videos just jabber away and no info about locking the lid. Where can I get a manual?
Hi Bonnie – here’s the manual online https://www.crock-pot.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-crock-pot-Library/default/dw188e9eba/documents/instruction-manuals/SCCPPC600-V1-Express%20Crock%20IB.PDF On the front of the pressure cooker there is an unlock symbol. Line up the arrow on the lid with the unlock symbol and twist it to the locked symbol.
Help! I just poured water into the Express pot without the nonstick pot (really dumb moment)
Most of it is all over my counter top and socks, but cooker won’t work, just dashes on screen. Please tell me I didn’t destroy it!
Hi Sonja – sorry! It does happen and most of the time it works again once it has time to dry out. Don’t try to use it until it is completely dry. You may be able to unscrew the bottom (I know others have on the Instant Pot) and that will help it dry out faster.
So do you add the water in the pot that you put the food in? I am trying to figure this out and it’s not very clear…I am worried if I add the water it will water down the other seasonings I am using!
Hi Ryan – usually add just enough liquid to the inner pot along with the food to come to pressure. It’s best to use easy recipes until you get used to pressure cooking. https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/easy-recipes-for-the-pressure-cooker/
The very first time out of the box I washed, dried completely and cooked boneless, skinless chicken breast. I cooked 4 1/2 lb., cut each breast in half, filled the cooker with 2 1/2 cups chicken broth. I make my own with chicken powder because it just tastes better and gives great flavor. I pressed the poultry button, pressed pressure to high and pressed the start button which shows the word HEAT on screen. It takes about 12-13 minutes to preheat and then the minutes will pop up and it starts cooking. When it stops it automatically switches over to warm setting or you can put it on the warm setting. The pressure valve MUST be set to on, the gasket inside must be dry and fit into the lid snugly. It is normal for it to let out some steam at times. It is very quiet and does not make the jiggling noise other pressure cookers make. (like Presto and older cookers). Crock Pot brand is a great tried and true cooker and always has been, which is why I bought it. The price didn’t matter. I do not need to pay more to have a good cooker. If anyone is not getting theirs to work they must be missing a step and doing something wrong more than likely, not all the time. I also did a quick release on pressure and it was perfect, just make sure you use a long utensil to push the lever over and give it a few minutes before you try and open lid. Slowly open and use towel or oven mitt to be safe. Keep your face away from the lid. Safety first.
Thanks for sharing Susie!
Hi,
I just bought a crockpot express and wondered what the low and high pressure functions did? I made a chicken curry with chicken breast and it was a bit too tender, almost dry , I wondered if I set it to low pressure or reduced the time it would have been better? Do you have any idea? Thanks!
Hi Lauren – yes, if you felt the chicken breast was overcooked you can use low pressure, but I would probably reduce the cook time instead. I haven’t found many benefits to low pressure unless something is super fast cooking like vegetables. Also, try boneless, skinless chicken thighs. They’re great in the pressure cooker – most of the fat melts away leaving moist and tender chicken.
I absolutely love the multi cooker!
I have two multi cookers, different sizes, with both, the rubber gasket smells really bad. The only way I can get it to stop is to put it in the dishwasher. Is this something you were aware of?
Can the top of the multi cooker be put in the dishwasher?
Hi Janet – it’s the silicone gasket that absorbs the odor. (Happens in all the electric pressure cookers.) I haven’t found anything that completely gets rid of the odor, even washing it in the dishwasher. I store the lid upside down on top of the pressure cooker and it airs out after a while.
My crockpot expressmulticooker , never lest the heat mode , I followed the directions, first time Inused it! Not sure what I’m doing wrong?
Hi Lynda – did you try it with the water test https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/instant-pot-water-test/
Having a problem with my Crockpot express multicooker , I followed directions and it never went out of heat mode? First time I used it! No I haven’t , I think I didn’t add enough water, could that be the problem.?
I just used my express crockpot multicooker for first time. Followed the instructions never got out of the heat mode? Tried again then it went to E 6 never to time mode. My food was over cooked. What did I do wrong?
Hi Lynda – sounds like you probably didn’t have enough liquid to come to pressure. What were you cooking?
Chicken in black beans and salsa I added 1/2 cup of water, was told chicken had more water ?
I hate this thing it was a gift and it’s going back. It doesn’t pressure correctly I’ve yet to see 10 mins to pressurize. I can open tye top immediately. It’s too much work it’s not making my life easier it’s a nightmare out the box
Sorry you’re struggling with getting the pressure cooker to come to pressure. Have you tried doing the water test with just a cup of water in the pot? https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/instant-pot-water-test/
My Crock Pot has a ‘pressure cook’ instead of a ‘soup’ button.
Have only had it a week and used 3 different functions so far but I love it
That’s great Rach! I heard the added a pressure cook button on the 8 quart. Is yours an 8 quart?
You should stop telling people it doesnt have a manual mode. If you actually read the manual and the yellow paper that comes with it you will see that the manual mode is used by selecting beans/chili and it functions as manual.
Hi Aaron – you can use the beans/chili mode but it isn’t the same thing as having a separate manual / pressure cook button that will let you select a time as low as 1 or even 0 minutes.
The + and – buttons don’t work with my presets so I cannot adjust the time or temp. Disappointing. 🙁
Hi Elizabeth – how long have you had your Crock-Pot Express? Can you return it?
I want to cook the ham off the bone. Do I use pressure cook or slow cook and for how long?
Hi Barb – this is how I heat ham slices on or off the bone https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/heating-ham-slices-in-the-pressure-cooker/
How do you deglaze the pot?
Hi Lori – after browning you deglaze the pot to get all of the little bits of browning off the bottom of the pot. If you’re sauteing onions after browning meat, the onions can deglaze the pot. You can see it in this video https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/beef-stroganoff-pressure-cooker/ If you’re not sauteing onions, then typically you’ll add a little broth, wine, or even water to deglaze the pot and just stir until the flavor comes off the bottom of the pot.
I just used a new out of the box crockpot express and it wouldn’t come up to pressure because it leaked so badly around the top seal. Because it leaked so bad it never stopped heating and the timer never started working. After 40 minutes of waiting for the timer to start I shut it off and opened it. Good thing I shut it down because my roast and vegetables were done. I will be returning it because I believe this one is defective. I was not impressed. Maybe the next one will function properly?
Hi Rex – sorry you had problems. That is frustrating. Did you try adjust the silicone gasket to see if it was seated properly? It’s always best to water test your pressure cooker before using to make sure it’s working properly. I talk about the water test in my getting started guide https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/getting-started-with-your-new-electric-pressure-cooker-or-instant-pot/
I made your Beef & Broccoli recipe for my first meal in my new Crock-pot Express and it was delicious. When I put the cornstarch in pot at the end to thicken it I was trying to turn down the temperature as it was really boiling but I couldn’t get it to go down. I tried pushing the minus button but it didn’t work. How do you get the temp down to a simmer?
Hi Cheryl – the easiest way to quickly lower the temperature in the pot is to lift the inner pot up away from the heating element on the bottom. Similar to remove a pan from a burner on the stove. You don’t have to take it out of the housing, just lift it a few inches. You can also just turn off the pressure cooker to reduce the temperature. Hope you enjoyed the meal.
If I need to maintain 15 psi for 30 min, is there a pressure setting for that?
Hi Jim – the Crockpot Express does not maintain pressure at 15 psi. You’ll need a pressure canner for that.
I just bought mine and am trying to figure out if I like it or not. The slow cooker function is ridiculous and shouldn’t even be an option on there which is disappointing. I am confused about determining cook times. For example, the manual says 7-9 minutes for sweet potatoes. Does that include the heat up time? I set mine for 7 minutes because I had a feeling they’d be mush and I was right. (That was 7 minutes after the heat up time.) My pork chops turned out a little dry and apparently I have to saute any meat that I want to cook before I select any other option. I feel like every meal is a science experience and do not ever want to waste any food. So far, everything I’ve made has turned out okay, but seems more of a hassle. With my crockpot, I could just dump in whatever I wanted and not think twice about it. The only thing I really like about this so far is that I can have dinner prepared a little faster. Are there any cookbooks out there for the crockpot Express cooker? I know there are Facebook groups but I’d rather just have a book to look at.
Hi Dena – there is a little bit of a learning curve for pressure cooking, but once you get the hang of it, most people really love it. The cook times do not include the time to get to pressure, just like if you were cooking a pot of pasta – the directions wouldn’t tell you how long it would take the pot of water to come to a boil – but you quickly learn to take that into account.
Lean meats are more difficult to get the timing just right, than meats with more marbling like pork shoulder. I’m not aware of any cookbooks just for the Crockpot Express but I do have a great cookbook that people are loving with recipes that will work in your Crockpot Express as well. https://amzn.to/2OckNNL Hang in there. Here’s my recommend recipes for beginners https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/easy-recipes-for-the-pressure-cooker/
When using the slow cook feature, does the cooker heat from the sides and bottom or just the bottom? I have not yet purchased one.
Just from the bottom.
Can I do freezer food like meat or vegetable that are freezer
Hi Liz – yes, you can cook meat and vegetables that are frozen. Here’s a post I did on cooking frozen chicken breasts https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/how-to-pressure-cook-frozen-chicken-breasts/ as well as a post from my good friend on doing freezer meals https://tidbits-marci.com/how-to-instant-pot-freezer-meals/
The Instant Pot has a manual mode that is referenced in many recipes on the web, what is the equivalent for the Crockpot Express?
Hi Heather – unfortunately, the Crockpot Express doesn’t have a manual / pressure cook button. You have to use one of the pre-programmed buttons and adjust the time.
how do you know which pre-program to use? i’ve just been guessing, depending on what the food item it.
thanks
Hi Kathy – which button you use doesn’t matter much. Just use the pressure cooking button with the closet cook time. https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/instant-pot-duo-and-smartcooker/
For 3 cup of rice how long should I cook for? And is it all the same timer for any cup of rice?
Hi Rie – yes the cook time will be the same for 3 cups of rice and for 1 cup of white rice. https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/pressure-cooker-white-rice/ Brown rice is a longer cook time https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/pressure-cooker-brown-rice-and-a-giveaway/
I need to use this for canning. How would I use the settings? For example: I need to cook at 10 psi for 15 minutes.
Hi David – the Crockpot will cycle on an off to maintain pressure. On the Crcokpot Express HIGH Pressure Setting is 6.5 – 10 PSI. Here’s a good post about canning in electric pressure cookers http://www.friedalovesbread.com/2017/09/safe-steam-canning-with-your-instant.html
How do you know how long your cooking?? Control panel is only going up to 2:00 is that hours or minutes?? Manual is really no help??? I hope this wasn’t a waste of $$
Hi Lora – sounds like you were using the timer button and that’s 2 hours? You’ll get the hang of it before you know it. Just use one of the pressure cooking functions. What are you trying to cook?
I received my Crock pot Express for Mothers day from my daughter. So far, I love it! I have made veggie beef soup, the traditional stew, beef and broccoli, rice pudding, banana bread with chocolate chips, and steamed corn on the cob and hard boiled eggs. Everything came out great. I carefully followed the directions and had no problems. I am 81 years old. It has a permanent space on my kitchen counter.
That’s awesome – thanks for sharing Janice!!
Does the cooking time for pressure cooking start when it starts making the noise or right when you press start? My recipe called for pressure cooking at 8 minutes then natural release for 10. I hit start and set the pressure at 8. Will it tell me when the 8 minutes is up? Now my cooker just says heat and then went back to a timer. Trying to understand it. So it has to build the pressure before the timer starts?
Hi Natalie – the pressure cooker has to reach full pressure before the cook time will start counting down. How long that takes will vary depending on much liquid / ingredients are in the inner pot, as well as the temperature of the ingredients. So a big pot of soup using cold ingredients could take 20 minutes to come to pressure before the time will start counting down.
I don’t like that mine has no audible alarm when the cycle is completed. I hate the valve because it spews hot liquid.
I am not able to control temperature and this unit has burnt my food.
Hi Dawn – if liquid is coming out of the valve, you need to close the valve and waiting a minute or two and then try again. Some things, like pasta, oatmeal, or applesauce need at least a little bit of a natural release so foam / liquid does not come out of the valve. Here’s more info on natural versus quick release https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/quick-pressure-release-or-natural-pressure-release/ If food is burning perhaps you’re not using enough liquid, or aren’t deglazing the pan after browning. Hang in there, you’ll get the hang of it. What recipes have you tried?
I got an E6 error code (not enough liquid) even though I have plenty of liquid in the cooker. I let it cool down and restarted. Still says E6. What else could be wrong? It appears from all the negative reviews on Amazon that scores of people have this problem. I just want to know what the answer is to make it right.
Hi Donna – sometimes if you’ve sauted something in the pot and haven’t deglazed the pot you’ll get a not enough liquid message. This can also occur if you’ve browned meat that is coated with flour and a thick layer of gravy settles to the bottom of the pot, or if your liquid is too thick.
I have had an e6 also I unplugged it and retried it. Sometimes it wasn’t connected correctly or nothing in the pot. And mine also steams liquid out when I release it. I have done frozen meat, 20 minutes done, dry kidney beans, soak beans for a few hours, normal time about 4,6,8 hours over night ok or watch them while they swell up, Cover the beans with liquid(water), cook them for about: small batch 20 min largest batch up to the fill line of beans and liquid, 40 mins,(note: cook beans first with the liquids, water, then recook beans with spices)Done soup, stuff from the freezer, dumped it in the pot,put a soup base in,like cream of mushroom, add some water to it,cover it up,push the soup button. I’ve learn when I do crockpot cooking have enough liquids. Haven’t tried the saute can’t fugue that out, and it does steam out liquids.
With the Saute function, you shouldn’t have the lid on it at all so the issue of liquid coming out is not applicable. Just put in what the recipe says and stir it until the recipe says to stop. For the other functions, I’ve never had an error message or liquid coming out the steam vent with my Crock Pot SCCPPC600-V1.
cooking a pot roast in my crockpot express did not come out as good as it did in my regular crock pot
Ross
Hi Ross – if your roast was tough, it needed a longer cook time. If your roast was dry, it needed a shorter cook time or a roast that had a little more marbling like chuck roast.
Ross I have great success with cooking either pot roast or stews. What I do is I slow cook for 3 hours then I pressure cook for 35 minutes. The meat is so tender you can cut it with a fork. The last pot roast i cooked was a brisket which is a very tough cut of meat and it was fabulous after pressure cooking
Hi. I was wondering how long i should pressure cook frozen pork sizzlers? I love my cooker and just used it to make chicken noodle soup.
Hi Christy – are the more pork chop style sizzlers or more hot dog style?
Hello!
I have tried my tried and true crockpot recipes in the Crockpot Express, but the meat keeps turning into hard lumps floating in the middle of my meal. (For example chicken and dumplings.)
I’ve tried cooking it longer and shorter than the normal time, but it seems to come out the same way.
Anyone have this problem, or know what it might be? I really like this cooker, but i was hoping to have only one bulky item on my counter….
Thanks!
Hi Wendy – it sounds like perhaps you’re using too much liquid and too long of a cook time. Lean meats such as chicken breasts are harder to get right at first, so try using chicken thighs, pork shoulder or chuck roast and less liquid. Here’s some easy recipes to get you started https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/easy-recipes-for-the-pressure-cooker/ Then once you have the hang of it, you can convert your own recipes https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/how-to-convert-a-recipe-into-a-pressure-cooker-recipe/
I have only used my crockpot express twice and the steam valve does not shut easily it actually closes after fiddling with it and over on the middle of open and close also when I turn the lid upside down the non dangles off really crooked like it’s going to fall off is this normal functions???
Hi Rachel – the Steam Release Valve is loose and that is normal. However, you shouldn’t have to fiddle with the float valve for it to rise and seal shut. Sometimes it seems like it isn’t going to close but if you give it a few minutes, it will close all by itself, but I don’t know if that’s the case here or if you do have a problem. I would practice with water in the pot and give it more time to seal itself. If you’re still having problems, you may need to contact the manufacturer or return the pc.
I am having a hard time finding a chart to know how much fluid to put in. I feel stupid but there is no section that says for 1kb of beef use x amount of liquid. Etc. is there an easy one somewhere?
Hi Amanda – when cooking most items in the pressure cooker, you’ll want to use the minimum required liquid typically 1 cup of liquid with things like meat that release liquid as they cook. Then you’ll end up with lots of flavorful broth to make gravies.
Hi
I tried a Mac and chees and it said to cook a whole pound of penne pasta in 4 cups of water for 4 minutes but I was not sure which of the settings to put it on. I think I finally chose beans and chili but it did not go down to 4 minutes. Also if you r timing it do you start counting after the initial heat setting goes off and the time appears ? It was just a little confusing but it turned out good with a little tweaking !
Hi Barb – you start the timing when the timing starts on the pressure cooker – that’s when it’s reached pressure. Sounds like you did it just right.
How many boneless chicken thighs will fit in the crockpot express? Thanks for your help.
Hi Laura – It would depend on the size of the thighs, but you should be able to double this recipe https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/pressure-cooker-thai-chicken-thighs/ so my guess is 16 thighs. But you only want to fill your pot 2/3’s full.
Why does mine take 20 minutes to get to pressure? What’s the normal time it takes for you guys ?
Hi Patrick – the time it takes to get to pressure depends on what’s in your pot. If it’s a big pot of soup with cold ingredients, it can take 20 minutes. However, for most dishes like my beef and broccoli, it should only take about 5 minutes.
I’m finding your information very helpful. I love my Crock-Pot MC but I can’t find any information on how to remove the silicone ring to clean it. Any tips or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
Hi Bernadette – you just pull the silicone ring out to clean it and then press it back into place, walking it around to push it back into place. I always clean it in soapy water. Sometimes it absorbs odors that won’t go away with washing. I just store the lid upside down on the pot and let it air out and eventually the odor goes away.
There is too much steam coming out of the bobber valve and the e6 appears what do I do?
Hi Sue – E6 from the manual: The Multi-Cooker will stop the cooking cycle. Unplug Multi-Cooker and allow to cool. Once it is cooled down, remove the Lid and check the Cooking Pot. Add liquid as necessary. Ensure a minimum of 8oz of liquid is used inside the removable Cooking Pot. If using a pressure cooking function, ensure that the Steam Release Valve is in the “Seal” (closed) position. What were you cooking in the pot? Did you have the Steam Release Valve in the closed position? Is your gasket seated properly?
How long does it take to cook a whole frozen chicken on the poultry function?
Hi Darren – I cook a 4 lb. chicken for 30 minutes. You’ll want to add about 5 minutes per pound for frozen chicken.
could you tell me what button you used for the whole chicken?
Hi Carol – depending on how large the chicken is the time will change, but the whole chicken recipe in my cookbook uses a 4 lb. chicken and I cook it for 32 minutes (8 minutes per pound approximately) so just use a button with the time closest to the time you need.
Have you tried to make yogurt in this machine yet? I have one and just tried the other day but it didn’t turn out too great. Mostly liquid. I think perhaps the yogurt “low” setting doesn’t get warm enough to incubate properly?
Hi Alyssa – I haven’t tried yogurt in the Crockpot Express. Perhaps there’s some tips in this post that will help https://tidbits-marci.com/instant-pot-yogurt/
I tried it and it turned out fine. If you drain it, it is much thicker.
When the recipe calls for 7 minutes pressure cooking time, and i use beans/chili button, do I add 7 minutes to the default 20 minutes?
Hi Erryn – no, you just want to cook it for 7 minutes, so I would use the beans button and reduce your time to 7 minutes.
My crockpot express exploded on my daughter. I️t gave her 2nd degree burns on her hand & arm
I’m so sorry that happened Genna. Here’s a good article that helps explain what probably went wrong https://www.hippressurecooking.com/consumer-alert-food-explosion-after-pressure-release/
Absolutely love this item. 1 week, 4 great and easy meals. Wondering however, what is the best way to cook piece or pieces of frozen fish?
What do you set yours on for beef broth? Making homemade beef broth and I have no idea what setting to use.
Hi Amanda – just use the setting with a long cook time. Soup adjusted to 1 to 2 hours would work great.
Hi, what setting do you use to cook pasta? Would it be the same for spaghetti vs. stuffed shells?
You can cook pasta on any of the high pressure cooker settings, meat for example. It’s best to use a recipe until you’re familiar with cooking pasta in the pressure cooker. https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/pressure-cooker-bow-tie-pasta/ Then once you’ve master cooking pasta, a general rule is half the cooking time on the package minus one minute. If you are cooking stuffed shells with cheese in the shells, you will want to cook it pot in pot like lasagna.
Does the steam function work for pressure cooking?
Hi Kris – yes, the steam function cooks at high pressure.
Thanks for this review. Just received mine and I’m excited to use it. Do you have a good recipe for a whole chicken? Thanks!
Exciting! I do have a great recipe for whole chicken in my cookbook http://amzn.to/2B7CYxJ
Thank you for all of the posts. They were very helpful. I would like to make chicken breast and rice in my pressure cooker. Can I cook them both at the same time? If so, high low? How long? Thank you!
Hi Trisha – are you wanting to cook it together casserole style https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/cheesy-chicken-broccoli-rice/ or chicken below and rice on top https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/pressure-cooker-chinese-lemon-chicken/
Can you pressure cook foods in bags such as turkey breast, carrots, potatoes all in separate bags that are vented?
Hi Dave – no, but you could create foil pouches to cook them in.
I want to make chicken breast. I do not want shredded chicken but firmer breasts for salads and other meals. The recipe says manual for 6 min (instapot). I see on Crockpot express we have to hit chicken for a minimum of 15 min. I don’t want it shredded so that seems wrong. Should I try that or hit the steam button.
Hi Mary – yes, that’s exactly right. Just use the setting with the time closest to the time you need.
It was perfect! Not overcooked and juicy!
Great! Thanks for the update 🙂
Can you share the recipe please
Here’s a helpful post https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/how-to-pressure-cook-frozen-chicken-breasts/
I am confused after it heats up it flashes 30 then. Punts down, I can’t change the time the button for timing doesn’t do anything. Very frustrating.
Hi Regina – the delay timer button is used to set the pressure cook to start later – you don’t want to eat right away so you set it to start in 30 minutes for example. You don’t use it if you’re cooking right now. Just choose the button you want to use – meat for example and use the “+” or “-” signs to increase or decrease the time and press start.
I want to cook a whole chicken but it is frozen could I still do it ? Also if I could what is the time to pressure Cook it?
Hi! Is the steam button the same as Beans/Chli, Multigrain, Soup, Poultry, etc?
Thanks!
The instruction manual says you can take off the Steam Release Valve and the Steam Release Valve Cover to clean them. How do you take them off? I don’t want to break them trying to figure it out.
Hi Lisa – the Steam Release Valve just pulls straight up. The Steam Release Valve Cover can be difficult to remove at first, just use a butter knife under the edge of the metal and it should just pop off.
My box did not have an instruction book. It was a gift so I have no idea where he bought it and I really don’t want to ask. Where can I get the book so I can use this?
Hi Brenda – here’s a link to the manual http://www.crock-pot.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-crock-pot-Library/default/dw188e9eba/documents/instruction-manuals/SCCPPC600-V1-Express%20Crock%20IB.PDF
I have been trying to make a pasta dish in the crockpot express but it keeps saying E6 when I try to use the “pressure cooking” presets. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong. Thanks.
Hi Keri – you probably don’t have enough liquid in the pot. I would finish the dish using the saute function and just simmer the pasta until it’s done. Add more liquid as needed.
Can you do any canning with the express pot? If so, what settings?
Hi Shawna – it’s my understanding that you can only do hot water bath canning in electric pressure cookers. You’ll need a large stove top pressure canner to can https://www.hippressurecooking.com/consumer-alert-no-pressure-canning-in-un-tested-multi-cookers/
Hi! I am brand new to this. I was just wanting to start outby cooking some seasoned frozen chicken? Can you tell me how much water to add and what settings to use? Thanks!!
Hi Emily – here’s a couple of frozen chicken recipes you can use as a guide https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/pressure-cooker-kalua-chicken/ and https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/salsa-lime-chicken-with-melted-mozzarella/ depending on the end result you’re looking for. It doesn’t matter which pre-set button you use, just use the pressure cooker setting with the time closest to the time in the recipe. Have fun!
I just cooked my first chicken, which was a bag of frozen Garlic Herb chicken breasts from Target. I put in half a cup of pineapple juice (recommendation from another chicken recipe I found) and 1/2 cup of chicken broth. I used the Poultru setting, and it came out tender and juicy!
Thanks for sharing Lisa!
My crock pot express only says heat. It never switches to the timer countdown after the pressure builds and there is a lot of steam coming out of the bobber. The steam valve is closed. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Anne – is your gasket in and seated properly?
The instruction booklet states that you can change the time during cooking by pressing the start/stop button and adding time. Every time I try it, I get the E4 error, and have to unplug the pot and start all over. Do you know what I might be doing wrong?
Hi Robin – why do you need to change the cook time during cooking?
I need more time to cook a 2 1/2 pound roast with potatoes and carrots. The highest pressure Time is 35 minutes for multigrain. So………how do we do it? Without releasing our pressure and starting all over again?
The settings are adjustable – for example, you just push the meat button and then immediately press the “+” button to increase the time before pressing the start button.
I recently did a Facebook Live video showing how to use the Crockpot Express to make hard boiled eggs https://www.facebook.com/PressureCookingToday/videos/1515627875200258/ Unfortunately, the sound cut out in parts, by there’s lots of useful information that will help.
My questions – or question is – When you make hard boiled eggs, what setting do you set it on??
Also when it has you set “high” or “low” pressure options – what button do you press?? So far I l tried split pea and ham soup in it on the soup button and it turned out fabulous! Thank you so much – Traci
Hi Traci – chose the button with the closest cook time to the time in the recipe you’re using. Dessert and Rice are the only pressure buttons that use low pressure. So generally you’ll cook on high pressure and use Soup, Poultry, Beans/Chili, Meat/Stew, or Multigrain. Glad the split pea soup was a hit!
For hard boil eggs use the steam button low pressure for 6 minutes. Let naturally depressurization for 5 minutes then do a quick release. Place eggs in ice water for 5 minutes and they peel perfectly. 2 cups water with rack in bottom and 8 eggs came out perfect.
Everyone’s perfect is a little bit different for hard boiled eggs. Thanks for sharing yours Sheila.
I just used steam for 6 minutes with 16 eggs in it. All came out perfect. Used the steam rack and enough water to not touch the eggs
I keep getting the E6 error, even when making soup and stew. There is plenty of fluid in the pot and I am below the max line. Not sure what to do.
Are you flouring your meat when browning? That can cause a layer of thick gravy to build up that can cause an overheating error.
I am getting an E3 on my front reading screen on my Power Pressue Cooker. It says in the book that it means a circuit problem. What does this mean? It just keeps coming back up when I reset it. Any suggestions?
Hi Teresa – if it’s a circuit problem, you’ll need to contact the company. http://www.powerpressurecooker.com/customer.php
Hi so I received this as a gift I was told there’s something you need to do before you can start using it looked at the instruction book and I don’t see what needs to be done before using this product Help!
Hi Monica – they’re probably referring to the water test, which isn’t critical but does help you learn how to use your new pressure cooker. There’s more info here https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/getting-started-with-your-new-electric-pressure-cooker-or-instant-pot/ Have fun!
Can I use Instant Pot recipes for the Express Pot? I can’t find many Express Pot recipes.
Hi Penelope – yes, all the recipes on my site and most Instant Pot recipes will work well in the Express Pot.
How do you convert the recipes? There is no “high pressure” button on the express pot and instant pot recipes keep directing you to use it.
Hi Denise – the soup, poultry, beans, meat, and multi-grain functions all cook on high pressure, so use one of those buttons that has the time closest to the time in the recipe you’re using.
Love the post! I just got one of these as a gift, and I can’t wait to use it. Thanks for sharing the details!
Hello! Did you use the slow cooker option? Does it slow cook well, I would assume so since it’s a CrockPot. But the slow cook option on the IP is only a warm option when on low and I don’t dare use the high option.
Hi Kathleen – Only once. I used the slow cooker option at the end of slowing a chicken recipe. It did a slow simmer on the low setting which I thought was impressive.
How does it compare to the Instant Pot?
The Instant Pot doesn’t have the cons listed, but some people prefer a non stick pot.
Thank you for the information. I have seen this brand on tv and wondered how it compared. I currently own 3 in 2 quart (Home Essentials), 6 quart (Faberware) and 10 quart (Ppxl). I like each for different reasons, and all are pretty comparable to this one you reviewed. You blogs have helped me get the best out of each one. Thank you for sharing your insights. Please, keep up the good works.
