Pressure Cooker Pink Rice
Pink rice is cooked to perfection in an electric pressure cooker (Instant Pot). Pressure Cooker Pink Rice lightly milled to retain the wholesome bran but it cooks in a fraction of the time of brown rice.
Diana, a sweet Pressure Cooking Today reader, emailed me asking advice on cooking Madagascar pink rice. Diana said the package described the pink rice as having a subtly sweet flavor, elusively aromatic of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, that the rice was nutritionally dense, and milled to retain most of the bran.
She wrote:
I just purchased some Madagascar pink rice and for the life of me I can’t seem to find a chart that tells how long pink rice needs to cook in a pressure cooker…..would you have any idea? I don’t want to turn it into mush and I don’t want to cook it on the stove top because rice comes out perfectly in my Instant Pot!
I couldn’t agree more. I love cooking rice in my electric pressure. I haven’t cooked rice on the stove since I got a pressure cooker.
How to Make Pink Rice in an Instant Pot
An Instant Pot is one of the most popular brands of electric pressure cookers. They are easy to use and your Instant Pot can help you create this fluffy pink rice!
The package directions said to use a 20 minute cook time on the stove, the same as long grain white rice, so I suggested using a 3 minute cook time with a 10 minute natural release.
After cooking the rice, Diana emailed me again and said the rice was really good, had a nice texture, and “it’s pretty too.” So I definitely had to find some and give it a try. I bought my pink rice at Whole Foods for about $4.00, but if you can’t find it in a store near you, you can buy it online.
When Diana made the rice a second time, she increased the cook time to 4 minutes and said it was perfect. I thought so too. If you’re a fan of brown rice, I think you’ll think this pretty rice is pretty perfect too.

Notes
A 15 ounce package is two cups of rice. I made the entire package. If you prefer, this recipe is easily halved.

I just got my instant pot and tried your method for the pink rice. It was perfect! Thank you. I was wondering if it is halved, would you still use the 4 min?
Thanks Terry! Yes, the cook time is the same if it is halved.
Hello!
Thank you for the most wonderful recipes for rice!
Do you have suggestions for red rice from Lotus foods? I am just starting to explore different rices and would appreciate your help.
Thank you!
Amy Shurtz
Thanks Amy! The cook time for the red should be the same as the pink rice. Enjoy!
I didn’t even know this Madagascar pink rice existed until you posted this recipe! LOL I purchased some from Amazon to try and today I followed your recipe above to cook some in my Instant Pot. The rice turned out absolutely perfect!! It was fluffy and cooked just right.
The rice is also delicious. As I told my friends, if you like wild rice, I suspect you’d like this pink rice. So flavorful. Love it!
So, thanks for not only posting this simple recipe that cooks it just perfectly but also for introducing me (and others, I’m sure!) to this amazingly delicious rice!
I have 3 bags of this! Perfect, thanks so much to Diana and you!
Question. With Instant Pot Duo…am I to select manual & when done simply let natural release for 10 mins? I have never turned the unit off. Selecting Manual automatically goes to High pressure. Is that correct. Appreciate info for beginners. Looking forward to trying this. Thanks
Yes, select manual and then just let the pressure release for 10 minutes. Here’s some posts that will help https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/quick-pressure-release-or-natural-pressure-release/ and https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/instant-pot-duo-and-smartcooker/. Have fun!
Thanks for reminding/letting us know about Lotus Foods. Most appreciated. Lotus Foods is a unique company and doing it’s part to help rice growers/farmers. So glad you wrote this because it reminded me that I hadn’t changed my email address at Lotus Foods. That’s why I no longer receive their emails.
Don’t forget to download their pamphlet, Do the Rice Thing! Homepage lotusfoods dot com, scroll down to middle of the page and click ‘Join Us’ to download the 8 page pamphlet describing the work they do with rice farmers.
Cooked red rice but never pink. Looks tasty and the cooking time is a plus. I see they now have rice ramen too.
Just ordered a pkg of pink rice. They have many other interesting rice packages and very unusual.
Uncle Ben’s will never be the same again. lol Mary
Hi Mary – they really do have some fun/interesting rices. Enjoy!
This looks so good. Thank you for putting Lotus Foods onto my radar. After looking at their site they are definitely a company that I want to get behind.
Thanks TerriSue!
It sure is pretty-and it sounds mighty tasty. I’ll have to take a look when I’m out shopping to see if our local stores carry pink rice. Our grocery store has expanded its rice and whole grain section…they may have it.
Thank you Barbara and Diana 🙂
