Making Honey Orange Pork in an Instant Pot
An Instant Pot is one of the most popular brands of electric pressure cookers. They are easy to use and your Instant Pot can help you create this delicious Honey Orange Pork!
Honey Orange Pork Ingredients:
- Pork shoulder meat
- Orange
- Cinnamon stick
- Garlic cloves
- Small onion
- Ginger
- Cloves
- Dried rosemary
- Water
- Light soy sauce
- Maple syrup
- Honey
- Grapeseed oil
- Kosher salt and black pepper
- Thickener: Cornstarch + water
As we were playing around with the ingredients while creating this Asian pork recipe, we’ve ensured that the flavors from the ingredients complement one another and the overall flavors are well balanced.
The orange in the recipe lends its citrusy fragrance and flavors to the dish. Though there’s a bit of bitter flavor coming from the orange peels, we’ve balanced it out by adding some honey and maple syrup.
The final results? Super tender pork in a deliciously sweet and zesty sauce.
Honey Orange Pork Recipe Tips:
Pressure Cooking Time: Adjust the pressure cooking time depending on how tender you like your pork to be.
- High Pressure for 50 minutes, then Natural Release – produces a fork-tender pork shoulder.
- High Pressure for 35 minutes, then Natural Release – produces pork shoulder with some chew.
Serve: This honey orange pork goes well with smooth and creamy mashed potatoes. You can serve it over rice or pasta too. Enjoy! 😀

Pressure Cooker Honey Orange Pork
Ingredients
- 1 - 1 1/2 pound pork shoulder meat
- 1 orange
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 1 tablespoon ginger, sliced
- 2 cloves
- A pinch of dried rosemary
- ½ cup water
- 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon grapeseed oil
- Kosher salt and black pepper
- 1 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
Season the pork with generous amount of kosher salt and ground black pepper.
Heat up your pressure cooker. Add 1 tablespoon of grapeseed oil and pork shoulder to the pressure cooking pot, then brown it for 3 to 5 minutes on each side. Remove and set aside.
Reduce the heat to medium. Add the sliced onions, ginger, a pinch of kosher salt and ground black pepper. Cook the onions and ginger for 1 minute. Add garlic and stir for 30 seconds.
Cut orange in half, squeeze the juice into the pot, and deglaze the bottom of the pot with a wooden spoon. Add in the water, light soy sauce, maple syrup, honey, cloves, cinnamon stick, a pinch of dried rosemary, and the squeezed orange (cut into smaller pieces), then deglaze the pot.
Place the pork into the pot. Lock the lid and cook on High Pressure for 50 minutes, then Natural Release.
Remove the pork. Turn on the heat to medium. Taste the sauce and adjust with additional salt and honey.
Remove the orange peels, cloves, and cinnamon stick. Mix the cornstarch with water, then mix it into the sauce one-third at a time until desired thickness. Turn off the heat and place the pork in the sauce and coat it evenly.

I made this tonight and it was absolutely delicious! The meat was so tender and the flavors were so yummy. Thank you for bringing new flavor profiles to my family and added excitement to the dinner table.
My mouth is watering just reading this and looking at the pics, this sounds like perfect comfort dish after a long day.
I live in Denver, CO (high altitude), which usually requires longer cooking. I made this recipe, following it to a tee.
The pork was dry and the orange totally fell apart which made it difficult to remove. The flavor had a slight bitterness possibly because I could not remove all the peel. If I made it again, I would not include the orange peel and I would cook it for less than the 50 minutes. I might mention that my pressure cooker is an Instantpot which I really love.
Hi Patty, thank you for using our recipe. I am sorry the pork came out dry.
I would like to troubleshoot this with you.
Was the pork shoulder quite lean?
Was full natural release used as an opening method?
Was the meat tough after cooking?
Thank you!
Jacky
That looks delicious! I’ve just started cooking pork shoulders and am always looking for new recipes for them. Can’t wait to try yours. I have a Cuisinart electric pressure cooker-think I will I have to make any adjustments to the recipe? I don’t have the option of turning down heat. Thanks!
Hi Carol, thank you for giving this recipe a go!
You can use the saute function on the Cuisinart electric pressure cooker for medium heat in the instructions 🙂
Thank you!
What do you do if your electric pressure cooker doesn’t have a medium heat setting? Also can ground cinnamon be used in place of a cinnamon stick? Is grapeseed. oil neccesary, can olive oil be used instead? This recipe sounds really good and I plan to use it soon.
Hi Barbara, thank you for the questions.
What kind of electric pressure cooker do you own? If it is an instant pot, you can click on Saute and the Adjust button twice to get to simmering mode.
Yes, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon can be used in place of a cinnamon stick. 🙂
Grapeseed oil is not necessary. It just pairs with pork very well and has a high smoking point. You can use olive oil instead 🙂
That looks so yummy! It’s on the menu for next week!
Thank you for trying our recipe Marci 🙂
Thanks for putting together and sharing this delicious looking pressure cooker recipe. Can’t wait to try it!
Hi Dp, thank you for your kind words 🙂
We prepared this tonight and oh my was it ever good -one of those dishes that makes owning a pressure cooker so worth the investment. The flavors seemed to compliment one another so well with the pork shoulder. This will be on the top of our favorites list.
Thanks again.
Yay!!!!! I am so glad you like it Dp. Thank you for trying our recipe 🙂
Also, it’s “ground” pepper, not “grounded.” Probably auto-correct but still. And sorry for the editing. I know it’s annoying, but I get compelled sometimes. It doesn’t take away from the great looking recipe, though! For my own typos here, mea culpa, lol. I can’t see what I’m typing worth a damn!!
Hehehe thank you Susan!! We have just corrected the typos 🙂
1) you have cinnamon stick in the ingredients list twice. : )
2) if one doesn’t eat pork or red meat, how long would chicken thighs take for the pressure part? It looks great and I’d love to try it with chicken. Thanks!!
1) Susan, thank you for catching that 🙂
2) If you are browning the chicken thighs prior to pressure cooking, it will take roughly 7 – 10 minutes depending on the thickness.
Looks yummy!!!! Will definitely try. Plan to use orange zest instead of the whole orange rind to eliminate the bitterness.
Thank you Liz!! If you don’t like bitterness, definitely replace it with orange zest 🙂
The bitterness does helps balance and enhance the dish. If you have time, try them both and see which one you like more!
